A Table for Grown Ups
A long, candle-lit table was set in the historic setting of The Old Liquor Store, York, the hum of conversation, red wine in tall glasses and a room full of people in that wise-sweet 45 - 60 pocket of life - old enough to know who they are, still young enough to want to be surprised.
We watched the same thing happen again:
people arrived nervously… and then forgot to be nervous.
Plates landed - slow braises, perfect pasta, generous sauces and something softened. Hands moved in gestures, shoulders dropped, strangers leaned in. The food did what food always does when people are ready to meet life halfway - it made space for conversation to unfurl.
This wasn’t dating. And it certainly wasn’t networking.
It was adults who have lived a bit, lost a bit, built a bit, all sitting down to eat together without a script.
One guest said something that stuck with us:
“The word of the night has to be: Convivial.”
No name badges. No prompts. No “go around the table and say your favourite…”.
Just forks and wine and eye contact - the real-world kind, not the kind mediated through a screen.
And because this age group carries stories - the conversation had depth. Not heavy, not forced, just textured. The kind that reminds you there are still people you haven’t met yet who might change how you think.
People lingered. Nobody rushed out. That tells you everything.
If you’re tired of swiping, or of evenings that feel engineered, or of waiting for connection to arrive at your door… The Good Taste Club is simply this:
A real table. Real people. And the reminder that connection still happens - not online, not in theory, but in rooms like this.
